This network engineering project involved designing and presenting a proposed network solution for a hypothetical company named Westwood Dental Practice as part of their planned refurbishment of its IT systems. The brief required a network that could support treatment rooms, reception, a file server, printer access, tablets, wireless connectivity and centralised access to practice files.
The proposed logical design used a star topology with one central switch, one main router, one wireless access point, five PCs, four tablets, one printer and one server. Each treatment room included a PC and tablet for accessing patient records and recording treatment details, while the reception area included a PC and printer. The server room contained a file server for storing practice files and supporting backup procedures.
I planned the IP addressing using a /24 subnet, with devices placed in the same subnet for simplicity and connectivity. Most devices were manually assigned IP addresses, while DHCP was used for the printer. The server was configured with a static IP address, subnet mask and default gateway to ensure reliable access from the rest of the network. Connectivity decisions included copper straight through cabling for wired devices and wireless connectivity between tablets and the access point.
This project helped me understand how network infrastructure supports real business operations, especially in environments where access to records, printing, backups and stable connectivity are important. It also built the foundation for later work with VLANs, GNS3, VPNs, Active Directory and security focused network testing.
